Lockheed Martin [LMT] announced Wednesday that NASA has extended its contract for facilities and operations development to support human spaceflight with a $167 million addition.

The one-year extension brings the total contract to $1 billion through September 2014.

The contract supports “hardware, software, data and display systems used to train for and execute all human spaceflight missions,” according to the company’s release.

The contract will further Lockheed’s efforts to update the Mission Control Center at Johnson Space Center in Houston. The update is meant to reduce operations and maintenance costs.

The contract follows a renewed emphasis on human spaceflight two years after the last space shuttle retired.
