Morpho Detection Nabs $38M TSA Order; Israel Orders Screening System
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has awarded Morpho Detection, Inc. (MDI), a $38 million delivery order for 32 CTX 9800 DSi medium speed explosives detection systems (EDS) to be delivered to airports across the country in the coming months. The delivery order was awarded late last year but MDI only announced it this month. The order is the largest ever for MDI’s CTX 9800, which also has a high-speed variant. The CTX 9800 was first deployed by TSA to Mineta San Jose International Airport in 2009 and so far more than 70 of the units have been ordered by the agency. Separately, the Israeli Airports Authority has selected MDI’s CTX/X-Ray Diffraction EDS system-of-systems for hold baggage screening at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv. The order follows a pilot test of the system integrated in the airport’s new baggage handling system. The value of the order and number of systems were not disclosed. The system-of-systems includes the CTX 9000 DSi and XRD 3500 EDS systems that typically use the 3500 EDS to automatically resolve any alarms uncovered by the CTX 9000. One or more CTX 9000s are integrated with a single XRD 3500. MDI says that by connecting all system-of-system workstations across Ben Gurion, the MUXv2 multiplex network enhances operational efficiencies and streamlines operations. MDI is a unit of the Safran Group.
Japan Awards Lockheed Martin $22M for CBR Detection Systems
The Japan Ministry of Defense recently awarded Lockheed Martin [LMT] $22.4 million for 19 AbleSentry systems for detection and early warning of a possible chemical, biological or radiological (CBR) attack. AbleSentry is designed for tactical battlefield use and includes a detection algorithm and an array of networked, remote sensors. The system is an evolution of the company’s Biological Aerosol Warning System (BAWS) and Enhanced BAWS platforms and adds both chemical and radiological detection capabilities while utilizing the same footprint. The remote sensors also measure wind speed and direction, temperature, humidity and location data while also collecting air samples for later biological agent confirmation and identification. “The system’s ability to provide information on where the threat is coming from and how fast it’s moving gives battlefield commanders the advanced warning system they need to make the decision necessary to keep their troops out of harm’s way,” says Daniel Heller, vice president of new business ventures for Lockheed Martin’s Mission Systems & Sensors business. Lockheed Martin has delivered 24 BAWS and EBAWS systems to the Japan Ground Self Defense Force since 2005. ITOCHU Corp. is Lockheed Martin’s trading partner on the deal.
