The Coast Guard’s Research and Development center has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for land-based Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) that can operate over the maritime environment. The service seeks information on non-developmental Technical Readiness Level six or higher UAS technologies available from the government, industry and academia. The new RFI is independent of a separate market survey the Coast Guard posted last fall for UAS to operate off of the National Security Cutter. The Land-Based UAS could be used for a variety of missions including search and rescue, counter drug law enforcement, migrant interdiction, living marine resources, and defense readiness. The UAS would operate offshore beyond line-of-sight and would require its own sensors to do surveillance, detection, classification and identification of targets of interest. The aircraft should have a minimum of 14-hour endurance and a 500-pound payload capability with an effective mission radius greater than 500 nautical miles.
