Smiths Detection has introduced a millimeter wave-based people screening system called eqo for detecting concealed weapons and explosives in a checkpoint setting. In use a person stands in front of a panel, allowing the operator to view images in real-time. eqo comprises a portal and panel configuration with no moving parts and provides electronically scanned images with instant messages. Smiths is introducing eqo in Europe first and then the U.S. later this year. The screener is called eqo because it senses the echo of the transmitted signals. eqo, which stands over six-feet high, can detect any hidden materials: metal; liquid; ceramic; and explosive. For a screening operation a person stands in front of the panel and the slowly turns around before continuing on his way. Smiths says that future configurations should allow travelers to pass through a series of panels without any pausing or turning. Privacy filters such as face blurring are built into the system.
