Lockheed Martin‘s [LMT] Savi Technology unit has introduced a tracking device that can switch from satellite or terrestrial wireless systems to continuously monitor the location and condition of shipments anywhere at anytime. The Portable In-Transit Tracking Unit (PITU) device is about the size of a digital video recorder and connects communications among RFID devices, GPS location and SatCom systems, global cellular networks and sensors that detect environmental and security changes. Savi says that PITU has been developed over the past year and that the first systems have been sold to several NATO defense forces in support of operations in Afghanistan. “This complete and compact mobile solution is the only three-way communication tracking solution that combines so many wireless tracking and sensor monitoring capabilities,” says David Stephens, Savi’s CEO. PITU was developed with Vari-Trac, a SatCom technology provider.
