The Defense Department has awarded Smiths Detection a $30 million contract for the enhanced M4A1 Joint Chemical Agent Detector, bringing the company’s awards under the program to over $350 million. Smiths began delivering the new devices, which are based on the company’s lightweight chemical detector 3.3, in April. The LCD 3.3. is an advanced, detect-to-warn device that protects troops or emergency responders by sampling the air for chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals. The device weighs less than two pounds. The order is the first significant one by DoD for the LCD 3.3. Smiths is manufacturing its JCAD devices in Maryland.
