OSI Systems [OSIS] Rapiscan division has entered the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) new round of competition for Whole Body Imagers (WBI) offering its Secure 1000 backscatter X-Ray system, Peter Kant, Rapiscan’s vice president of Global Government Affairs, tells TR2 at the recent FPED VII demonstration. Rapiscan and American Science and Engineering [ASEI] each participated in pilot testing of their respective backscatter personnel imaging systems at one or more airports but TSA eventually opted to acquire L-3 Communications’ [LLL] ProVision millimeter wave imaging system for more extensive demonstration deployments. In the new competition L-3 may be facing competition from Smiths Detection, which earlier this year introduced a millimeter wave WBI system, and Rapiscan. Kant says the for the new competition the Secure 1000 is being offered as a primary screening device that involves a single pose by an individual rather than having a person be scanned from two different angles. AS&E tells TR2 they did not enter its SmartCheck WBI system into the competition. Separately, Rapiscan is working with Canada’s OptoSecurity on enhancements to its 620DV Advanced Technology X-Ray system to give it a different level of capability to detect liquids and weapons, providing options to TSA and other potential customers, Kant says. OptoSecurity was at Rapiscan’s booth at FPED.
