The Navy has placed an order with GE Aviation, a division of General Electric [GE], for 52 engines that will be installed on F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighters and EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft.

The contract option comes after the Navy earlier this year ordered 82 of the F414 engines. Additional options for more than 200 engines could increase the total value of the contract to more than $800 million through 2013, GE Aviation said yesterday.

While the Boeing [BA] F/A-18s and EA-18s carry out different missions and payloads, they share a similar airframe.
