Lockheed Martin [LMT] yesterday said its Space Systems company has formed a technology hub to expand its collaboration with technology innovators in Silicon Valley in order to better meet the needs of the federal government.

The company said the Lockheed Martin Silicon Valley Alliance will provide the government with greater visibility into new technology solutions, including affordable software and cyber security solutions. The company points out that software used in video games could improve the realism of a military simulation system.

“The government market catalyzed the initial growth of all high-tech industries in the San Francisco Bay area,” Tony Bruno, president of Lockheed Martin’s Strategic and Missile Defense Systems, said in a statement. “Now, through the Lockheed Martin Silicon Valley Alliance, we can help to reconnect today’s companies to that market, which continues to be substantial despite a challenging economy.”

Lockheed Martin also said that through its customer base in the Defense Department, NASA and other federal agencies, it will be able to facilitate partnerships with technology companies to translate development into products that meet federal needs.
