Building on an existing partnership, L-3 Communications [LLL] yesterday said it has signed a strategic collaboration agreement with Baron Services Inc. to pursue opportunities in weather radar systems in the United States and globally.
L-3 said its National Security Solutions business and Baron will pursue more joint business opportunities, including new installations, existing radar equipment upgrades or refurbishments, and weather products for integration into larger systems and weather operations centers.

“Our partnership will focus on the global weather community that seeks to leverage leading edge weather systems and solutions to dramatically improve meteorological forecasting and weather-related situational awareness,” Gene Hayman, vice president for Space & Aviation Solutions at L-3’s National Security Solutions-STRATIS unit, told Defense Daily via email reply to questions. “This community includes U.S. governmental agencies, both military and civil, international governments and international aviation authorities who want to bolster the safety of their national air space and lay a stronger foundation for economic growth by mitigating the impacts of weather on trade.”
L-3 will provide systems integration capabilities, including management, planning, logistics, coordination, reporting and customer interface, under the agreement. Baron will provide hardware and software design and testing, manage suppliers, and procure, assemble and deliver products for installation.
Hayman said the agreement with Baron differs from past partnerships, which he said were more focused around specific opportunities, while the new collaboration “represents a long-term commitment between the two firms to jointly seek out new opportunities and devise new solutions to better serve public safety, domestically and internationally.”
Alabama-based Baron specializes in providing weather information to governments, businesses and broadcasters.
