The State Department approved a possible $800 million Foreign Military Sale (FMS) request to Iraq for 5,000 Hellfire missiles, Captive Air Training Missiles, related equipment, and support.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress of the potential sale on Jan. 6.
The requested FMS would include 5,000 AGM-114K/N/R Hellfire missiles, 10 114K M36E9 Captive Air Training Missiles, associated equipment, and defense services. The value of the major defense equipment (MDE) is $750 million.
The prime contractor for the sale would be Lockheed Martin [LMT] with no known offset agreements proposed with the sale.
Iraq would use the missiles to improve the Iraq Security Forces’ capability to support ongoing combat operations and in future contingency operations, DSCA said.
The agency highlighted this sale would help the Iraq Security Forces in defeating the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), also called ISIS.
Implementation of the sale would not require U.S. government or contractor representatives to travel to Iraq.
