The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently announced a new initiative designed to help students and veterans in the nation’s community colleges to obtain experience and skills by working with the department’s cyber security community.
The Cyber Student Initiative, part of the DHS Secretary’s Honors Program launched last fall, will provide training centers at local Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations field offices for selected cyber students to gain hands-on experience in cyber security.
“The Secretary’s Honors Program Cyber Student Initiative will offer current students the opportunity to learn more about the critical skills and experience needed to succeed and protect our nation from evolving cyber threats,” Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a statement.
The initiative is an unpaid volunteer program for community college students pursing studies in cyber security. ICE has computer forensic labs in 36 cities nationwide.
