DNDO Plans Handheld System Award to Smiths; Then Full Competition

The Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) plans to award an approximately $3.4 million sole-source contract to Smiths Detection for its RadSeeker handheld radiation detection and identification system using FY ’12 funding. The planned award is a follow-on to an existing contract that meets the needs of individual Department of Homeland Security Components. Beginning in FY ’13, DNDO plans to open the procurement to new competition for an award through FY ’17. A solicitation is expected to be released this summer for the new competition for a Basic Handheld Radiation Detection and Identification System. Sol. No. HSHQDC-12-R-00045. DNDO Issues RFI for COTS Radiation Portal Monitoring System

The Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) as part of a targeted research effort to determine available sources for current, state-of-the-art, radiation portal monitoring (RPM) system. The responses will support acquisition decisions for the RPM program within DNDO. DNDO says it is taking a commercial-first approach in seeking available solutions to fill the needs of Department of Homeland Security components in the areas of radiation and nuclear detection. The current RFI is for detection systems that can detect threats in conveyances that transit through land and seaports of entry and could supplement or supplant current deployed fixed RPMs. The systems that DNDO seeks information on should be ready for immediate deployment and use technologies other than helium-3 for neutron detection.
