Boeing [BA] and Lockheed Martin [LMT] have joined other companies and organizations in an initiative announced yesterday to train military veterans and find them advanced jobs in the manufacturing sector.
General Electric [GE] and Alcoa [AA] are also among the companies and think tanks supporting the Get Skills to Work initiative that will be managed by the Manufacturing Institute, an affiliate of the National Association of Manufacturers.
The group’s goal is to train 100,000 former service members and match them with jobs by 2015, according to a press release issued by the Manufacturing Institute.
“Working with our partners, we will help create real opportunities for transitioning service members to get the skills they need to access in-demand manufacturing jobs,” Jennifer McNelly, the president of the Manufacturing Institute said.
The purpose of the coalition is to accelerate training for veteran, help veteran and employers translate military skills to manufacturing positions and providing prospective employers with the tools to recruit, hire and mentor veterans, the institute said.
The Manufacturing Institute has enlisted technology company Futures Inc. to help merge military occupational codes and apply them to opportunities in the civilian manufacturing workforce, the organization said.
