The Air National Guard has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for an Unattended Ground System (UGS) that can help protect its bases around the country. The selected system must detect personnel and vehicles, have a low false alarm rate, be self forming and self healing, easy to use, easy to integrate with radar and camera systems and have low maintenance costs. The Guard says that it has insufficient funding to adequately protect its high dollar assets such as fighter and cargo aircraft. Radar and camera systems are installed at some facilities but are insufficient to guard most bases, leaving blind spots that can be exploited by terrorists. The Guard wants to integrate a UGS system into one of its bases to test the viability of such a system in helping protect its flight line assets as a possible template for protecting all of its bases around the country.
