The Air Force launched an unarmed Minuteman III ICBM Sunday at 2:34 a.m. EST from Vandenberg AFB, Calif., according to a service statement.

The ICBM’s reentry vehicle, which contained a telemetry package used for operational testing, traveled approximately 4,200 miles to the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. Test launches verify the accuracy and reliability of the ICBM weapon system, providing valuable data to ensure a continued safe, secure and effective nuclear deterrent.

A spokeswoman with Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) said Monday the service had another Minuteman III test launch scheduled for the weekend of Feb. 26 and that the Air Force would release specific details about the test launch later this week. AFGSC is responsible for the United States’ three ICBM wings, the Air Force’s entire bomber force, including the B-52, B-1 and B-2 wings, the Long Range Strike Bomber (LRSB) program and operational and maintenance support to organizations within the nuclear enterprise.
