Turkey’s Ministry of Transportation has completed deployment of a Vessel Traffic Management Information System (VTMIS) supplied by Lockheed Martin [LMT]. The final phase of the system’s deployment included three new remote sensor sites which consist of radars, cameras, radio direction finders, Automatic Identification System, Doppler current and salinity sensors, surface water measurement and automatic weather stations, to provide coverage of the Marmara Sea and entrance to the Canakkale Straits. Turkey began deploying the VTMIS in 2003. The VTMIS provides users with a comprehensive picture of the existing and developing maritime traffic situation, helping provide safer navigation and improved search and rescue.
