The Department of Defense Operationally Responsive Space (ORS) office recently released a request for information (RFI) to help accomplish the office develop a rapid response space center, called Chileworks.
U.S. leaders have said the spread of anti-satellite capabilities to nations such as China means the United States needs to be able to replace key satellites rapidly.
“We look forward to receiving innovative ideas and approaches to assist us in demonstrating Tier 2 and 3 capabilities,” said Dr. Peter Wegner, director of the ORS office.
Tier 2 and Tier 3 capabilities are components of the ORS 2015 Blueprint. Tier 2 will deploy new or additional capabilities that are field ready within days to weeks of the request for the need from the Joint Force Commander. Tier 3 involves the rapid development, delivery, and deployment of a new capability or space asset within months to less than one year from receipt of the original request from the Joint Force Commander.
There are four major phases associated with Chileworks–first, standing up specific manufacturing and test capabilities (processes and equipment, procedures, initial inventory); second, establishing routine operations (maintenance, training, process improvement); third, supporting user training/planning functions (war games, exercises); and fourth, responding to emerging, persistent, and/or unanticipated needs. To implement the phases, three major functions including Systems Engineering and Integration (SE&I), Integrated Logistics Support, and Assembly, Integration and Test (AI&T) must occur within Chileworks. The ORS Office is planning an Industry Day next week on Feb. 11-12 at the South Broadway Cultural Center, 1025 Broadway Blvd. SE, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
ORS Industry Day will provide an opportunity to hear from Dr. Peter Wegner, ORS Director, on a variety of issues, and an opportunity to participate in one-on-one sessions with ORS personnel. The Operationally Responsive Space Office is working with the broader space community to provide assured space power focused on the timely satisfaction of Joint Force Commanders’ needs. The overarching objective of the Office is to address emerging, persistent, and/or unanticipated needs through timely augmentation, reconstitution, and exploitation of space force enhancement, space control, and space support capabilities.
