The U.S. and Japan announced the deployment of a second Army Navy/Transportable Radar Surveillance (AN/TPY-2) radar to Kyogamisaki on Dec. 26.

The second radar is meant to enhance sensor coverage for ballistic missile defense of Japan and the U.S. The Kyogamisaki Communications Site (KCS) radar is planned to enhance an existing radar at Shariki in northern Japan, the U.S. Department of Defense explained in a statement.

The U.S. fielded and tested the radar and constructed the facility in Japan. Subsequently U.S. Pacific Command and Northern Command delivered the radar for use.

The AN/TPY-2 is a transportable radar system “that performs as a highly-capable sensor for both homeland and regional defense,” the Department of Defense said.

Other AN/TPY-2 forward-based radars are currently in Turkey and the Middle East.

The AN/TPY-2 is produced by Raytheon [RTN].
