The Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded Raytheon [RTN] a $19 million contract to develop and demonstrate a laser radar vibration sensor that could be used to detect and locate buried land mines and tunnels. The ladar vibrometer would reveal hidden targets by measuring ground-surface vibrations and use algorithms to interpret the information. The system would integrate acoustic and seismic sources for field testing on a moving vehicle. The project will also be the first military use of the company’s Morphable Networked Micro-architecture processor, a computer whose architecture can adopt different forms depending on the application.
