Success Story: Foil Gas Bearing Compressors Commercialized for Fuel Cells

PR Newswire

BLOOMFIELD, Conn., March 18, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — R&D Dynamics Corporation, located in Bloomfield, Connecticut has successfully commercialized their oil-free compressor technology for mobile fuel cell applications. They recently were awarded a production contract to supply high-pressure ratio, oil-free, foil-bearing supported compressors for a major fuel cell manufacturer. Fuel cells were invented in 1838, and only in the last 40 years, was the technology matured and made cost-effective for commercial use. A major roadblock has been the machinery technology that can deliver compressed air to the fuel cell stack for contamination-free operation. R&D Dynamic’s unique, patented, aerospace-proven air bearing technology has eliminated this hurdle and successfully enabled the commercialization of fuel cells for vehicle applications, such as cars and mobile fuel cell systems.

What is more compelling and comforting than to know R&D Dynamics compressors are based on aerospace technology currently being used in 40,000 aircraft flying around the world? Fuel cell manufacturers are excited and talking about many advantages in using this compressor technology such as oil-free operation, reliability, energy efficiency, compactness and cost-effectiveness. R&D Dynamics President describes this success as “We are shaping the energy future with our high technology products.” Their business development and engineering team said: “They are thrilled about manufacturing these compressors at their manufacturing facility in Connecticut.” R&D Dynamics foresees this success as their big leap to transform their company from a small to a mid-size corporation. This is a great American success story, bringing back high technology manufacturing and creating jobs for the country.
