Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has been named the first lab to test commercial radiation detectors under the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Graduated Radiation and Nuclear Detector Evaluation and Reporting (GRaDER) program. The program, established by the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, accredited labs test radiation detection products from various vendors or manufacturers. “It really comes down to emergency responders having the best tools available,” says Michelle Johnson, project manager for PNNL’s Ionizing Radiation Lab. “We’ll be objective technical experts.”
