Another operational test launch of an unarmed Minuteman III ICBM is scheduled for Thursday morning between 6:01 a.m. and 12:01 p.m. EDT from Vandenberg AFB, Calif., according to the Air Force.
The missile’s unarmed re-entry system is expected to travel approximately 4,200 miles to the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The information obtained during test launches enables planners to ensure continued sustainment of the ICBM program.

This is the second Minuteman III operational test launch within a week, following the successful test launch Sunday (Defense Daily, Sept. 24). Launches were scheduled to take advantage of range availability, the Air Force said. It also enabled Global Strike Command (AFGSC) to make efficient use of resources by using the same launch team for both launches.
The ICBM test launch program supports United States strategic deterrence policy as outlined in the 2010 Defense Department Nuclear Posture Review by demonstrating the operational credibility of the Minuteman III. DoD and Energy Department agencies will use data collected from the test launch to ensure contribute to the nation’s strategic deterrence goals.
