The House Appropriations Homeland Security Subcommittee (HAC-HS) on Thursday unanimously approved by voice vote a $41.1 billion discretionary spending bill for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in FY ’17.100x100 us capitol

The full committee is slated to markup the bill on June 14.

No amendments were included as part of the subcommittee’s markup, which includes $37.6 million for the Coast Guard to begin work toward a new heavy Polar icebreaker. The service had requested $150 million for the icebreaker but Rep. John Carter (R-Texas), chairman of the subcommittee, said that the request was cut because only $37.6 million could be obligated next year.

Senate appropriators put $1 billion for construction of the icebreaker in their version of the FY ’17 defense bill.

The markup provides $432 million more than DHS requested and $100 million more than enacted for the department in FY ’16. Senate appropriators have recommended $41.2 billion for DHS in FY ’17.
