Florida’s Department of Transportation, division of motor carrier compliance, has ordered a single Mobile Nuclear Radiation Detection System from Raytheon [RTN], which has delivered similar systems to the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO). Raytheon has developed the SUV-based radiation detection system under its contract with DNDO for the development of the Advanced Spectroscopic Portal (ASP), the next generation of radiation portal monitor (TR2, Feb. 20, 2008). Raytheon says that Florida will use the system for operations in urban areas to safeguard against nuclear threats on highways, bridges, overpasses, tunnels, ports of entry, and public venues. Textron [TXT], which is not involved in the ASP program, has also sold mobile radiation detection systems to states and municipalities.
