Dynasil Corp. [DYSL] says its research division, Radiation Monitoring Devices, Inc., was granted additional U.S. patent claims for advances in a detector crystal capable of responding independently to both neutron and gamma radiation. The company says the detector material advancement is critical because the most commonly available technology for detecting neutrons in homeland security applications, specifically neutron detectors based on gaseous Helium-3, is become impractical because of limitations on the availability of this gas. To make the detector technology available quickly for both government and commercial markets, the company has developed specialized production furnaces designed to make the crystals in large volumes. The initial furnaces have been deployed and more will be in service in the coming months, Dynasil says. The company expects to be ready to supply production volume shipments of the new detectors in the third quarter of 2011. Dynasil has a number of additional patent applications pending that cover other aspects of detection technology.
