James Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence, announced the establishment of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC) on Monday, a statement from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) said.

National Counterintelligence Executive (NCIX) William “Bill” Evanina will adopt the additional role as the NCSC Director.

The NCSC is to perform the counterintelligence responsibilities of the NCIX and the Office of the National Counterintelligence, fulfilling their responsibilities as outlined in the Counterintelligence Enhancement Act of 2002.

The organization of the NCSC is comparable to similar ODNI centers such as the National Counterproliferation Center and the National Counterterrorism Center

“The establishment of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center supports our effort to ensure counterintelligence and security are addressed as interdependent and mutually supportive disciplines,” Clapper said in a statement.

The establishment of the Center is the next step in the integration of counterintelligence and security missions under a unified organization structure, ODNI said.

“These disciplines have shared objectives and responsibilities associated with the protection of information, sources and methods,” it said.
