Cogent Systems [COGT] won an initial $11 million contract from the Spain’s Ministry of Interior, General Directorate of the Police and Civil Guard, for a national criminal automated fingerprint and palm print identification system (APFIS). Under the contract Cogent will also supply livescan and mobile identification units. The new APFIS system will allow for closer integration with other databases such as Europe’s Shengen System and Interpol. Cogent beat incumbent NEC Corp. [NIPNY] for the contract. Cogent believes the win could lead to other opportunities in Spain and Europe. Stanford Group security analyst Jeremy Grant says the award value could reach between $25 million and $30 million over five years with add-ons. He looks for the win to augment the company’s growth in 2008.
