PNNL Issues RFI for Remote Monitoring of Civilian Rad/Nuke Materials Globally

The Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for interested parties capable of providing a remote monitoring system in support of the Global Threat Reduction Initiative (GTRI). The mission of the GTRI is to reduce and protect vulnerable nuclear and radiological materials located at civilian sites worldwide. The Office of Global Threat Reductions is seeking to enhance the security of radioactive sources at civilian sites by enabling the use of a remote monitoring system to support monitoring of tamper indicating devices, area radiation monitoring, and cameras located in rooms or bunkers containing sources. FBI Plans Tech Demo to Showcase Combined Face/Iris Collection Systems

The FBI is inviting vendors that have systems that can perform combined face and iris capture to participate in a technology showcase demonstration on Dec. 4 in Atlanta. The agency is evaluating the feasibility and affordability of encouraging increased collection of iris data from criminal subjects by state and local criminal justice partners. It says that recent advances in the reliability of facial recognition and comparison technologies are bringing face on par with fingerprints as a “must have” biometric. The reason use of iris is lagging is due in part to the higher cost of integrating iris sensors into the existing booking process, a more involved collection effort, and the lack of large iris databases for useful services for those organizations collecting and using iris information, the FBI says. It adds that because most state and local law enforcement partners are already capturing facial images during the criminal justice process, these agencies may be more likely to embrace iris collection if it could be accomplished from a single collection platform that also collects facial images. The purpose of the upcoming technology demonstration is to increase technical familiarity of combined face/iris collection systems among these partners. The showcase will be held in conjunction with the FBI Criminal Justice Information Division’s semi-annual Advisory Policy Board meeting. Sol. No. CHIS-APB-12042013. Respond by Nov. 6.
