FAA Soliciting Airports to Participate UAS Detection and Mitigation Research Program

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a solicitation seeking airport operators to host a portion of the agency’s Airport Unmanned Aircraft System(s) Detection and Mitigation Research Program. The FAA expected to select four airport operators. The program will include five airports, with Atlantic City International (KACY) already selected. The testing and evaluation program will consist of two phases. In Phase 1 at KACY, environmental impacts, electronic interference, and other factors will be closely monitored and accounted for to generate baseline performance data for UAS detection and mitigation systems and technologies. KACY is collocated with the FAA’s William J. Hughes Technical Center, which will enable the agency to monitor potential interference issues against numerous air traffic navigation, surveillance and weather systems that are currently deployed at the center. As part of Phase 2, the FAA will install, test and evaluates various types of UAS detection and or mitigation technologies and systems at the four additional airports. One of the selected airports must rank in the top 10 of the FAA’s most recent passenger boarding data. Notice ID: 692M15-20-R-00028. Respond by Oct. 22. Contact: Karen Thorngren, [email protected]

DHS S&T Surveys Market for Explosive Trace Detectors

The Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate issued a Request for Information on handheld, portable and desktop explosive trace detectors that can analyze wipe samples collected from surfaces of packages, baggage, automobiles or other objects. The technologies will be included in a market survey conducted by the National Urban Security Technology Laboratory. “Explosives trace detectors are one of the primary tools that front-line local, state, tribal and federal security personnel have at their disposal to detect explosives hidden in packages, vehicles, luggage and other items,” said NUSTL chemist John Kada, the technical project lead. The market survey report will be posted to the NUSTL System Assessment and Validation for Emergency Responders program on S&Ts SAVER Document Library. Notice ID: DHS_ST_ETC_RFI. Respond by Oct. 8.
