DHS S&T Issues Apex Screening at Speed Call for Advanced X-Ray Systems Development

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate has issued its first call solicitation under its Apex Screening at Speed (SaS) program, which is aimed at helping speed the screening process at airports and also keeping pace with  evolving threats. The call is a Broad Agency Announcement that is focused on three topic areas: Advanced X-Ray Systems Development, including development and testing of full-up system engineering design models; Advanced Algorithms and System Integration, which is for development and testing of threat detection and false alarm reduction algorithms and integration into operational/prototype systems, and demonstration of real-time operation; and Supporting Component Technology Development, including the development and maturation of system components and subsystems such  as X-Ray sources and detectors necessary to evolve laboratory and experimental prototypes into full-up X-Ray system designs able to meth the Advanced X-Ray Systems requirements. This BAA call is mainly seeking responses offering significant enhancements to current passenger baggage screening systems detection and false alarm capabilities. S&T is largely interested in Type II efforts, those two-years in duration, with a transition of technology to the Transportation Security Administration in two to three years. S&T is also interested in Type III technology efforts that can be done in one-year or less and can lead to nearer-term retrofit capability into currently deployed Explosive Detection Systems and Advanced Technology X-Ray systems. DHS S&T Seeks Anti-Jamming Technology for First Responders

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) branch has issued a Request for Information for participation in the 2017 First Responder Electronic Jamming Exercise at Idaho National Laboratory from July 17 to July 22. S&T seeks to evaluate technology solutions that identify, locate and mitigate the impact of jamming of communications and position, navigation and timing systems used by law enforcement and public safety organizations. The exercise this summer builds off the findings of the 2016 First Responder Electronic Jamming Exercise, which validated the hypothesis that commercially available illegal jammers can impede public safety communications and first responders’ ability to successfully complete their mission.
