agents this month rescued an individual at risk of drowning in Southern California in the New Briar Canal after the person was spotted via a Remote Video Surveillance System illegally entering the U.S. Agents using the sensor system observed the individual swim across the All-American Canal and then attempt the same feat in the New Briar Canal where he encountered difficulty. Agents in the field were notified and arrive on scene to rescue, and then apprehend, the individual.

The Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office in February hosted its first ever meeting of senior state and local officials that work in 14 jurisdictions that participate in the Securing the Cities program to share best practices for protecting their citizens from radiological and nuclear threats. “This meeting is the first of many we are planning to help our partners learn from each other by sharing information, strategic direction, and critical developments,” says Gary Rasicot, the Department of Homeland Security’s acting assistant secretary for CWMD. “The meeting also provided CWMD and our federal partners the chance to hear directly from state and local officials about their needs.”

Customs and Border Protection has expanded the use of its facial comparison technology in partnership with Carnival Cruise Line to the debarkation process at the Port of Mobile, Ala. Currently, the facial biometric technology is available at 13 seaports across the U.S. The technology, which is also in use at airports and land ports, replaces the manual inspection of travel documents. Passengers pause for a photo when debarking the cruise vessel at a U.S. seaport and the live image is compared to the traveler’s existing passport or visa photo in a secure DHS system to verify the identity.
