Australia’s Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government has selected American Science and Engineering [ASEI] and OSI Systems [OSIS] Rapiscan division to supply their respective backscatter personnel imaging systems to be used in pilot tests at two of the country’s airports. AS&E’s SmartCheck system will be tested at Sydney International Airport and Rapiscan’s Secure 1000 system will be tested at Melbourne Airport. Both systems are being evaluated in secondary screening mode at some U.S. airports by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA). AS&E says that so far in the U.S. trials 90 percent of passengers have opted for the imaging scan versus a pat down search by a security officer. In addition to having its Secure 1000 tested, the Department of Infrastructure’s Office of Transport Security will also test Rapiscan’s 620DV Advanced Technology X-Ray system at Melbourne Airport. The tests using the 620DV and backscatter screening systems are part Advanced Technology Trials being hosted the Office of Transport Security. The 620DV is being acquired by TSA for checkpoint screening of carry-on bags at U.S. airports.
