Following a spate of orders for its Z Backscatter Van (ZBV) non-intrusive inspection systems, American Science and Technology [ASEI] has received a $23 million order from a U.S. military customer for its SmartCheck whole body imaging system. The order is the first significant purchase of SmartCheck from any customer. AS&E says the systems will be deployed in a rugged environment to provide security officials with a fast and reliable way to screen people for a wide variety of threats. SmartCheck is based on backscatter X-Ray technology. SmartCheck was pilot tested by the Transportation Security Administration at a U.S. airport but the agency so far hasn’t qualified the system for deployment at the nation’s airports. Currently TSA is purchasing whole body imaging systems from OSI Systems [OSIS] and L-3 Communications [LLL] and deploying them at airport security checkpoints. Separately, the company announced another ZBV award, a $5.3 million follow-on order from a Latin American customs organization. The order includes operator training, service and warranty. The Latin American customer, who was not named, made an $8.3 million ZBV purchase early last month. In July AS&E announced several orders for its ZBV systems totaling over $18 million.
