The Air Force awarded Northrop Grumman [NOC] a $39.7 million contract to design, develop, test and qualify a replacement payload transporter system (PTS) for the U.S. ICBM weapon system, according to a company statement.

Northrop Grumman said the program will provide a replacement for the existing payload transporter that is nearing the end of its design life. Company spokesman Bryce McDevitt said Monday the current payload transporter is the Minuteman Payload Transporter, Type III (PT III).

McDevitt said Mandall Barrier Works is partnering with Northrop Grumman on the contract, providing “innovative advancements” in security design to ensure safety and protection requirements for PTS. Mandall Barrier Works designs high-security door systems and portable armor units, according to its website.

Northrop Grumman said its ICBM team has supported the Air Force in the overall sustainment of the weapon system, including development, production, deployment and system modifications.

The contract is a four-year deal.
