The Port of Los Angeles has awarded Unisys [UIS] a potential $1 million contract to design and manage an identification and access control system field test under the federal Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program. The value of the award will not exceed $1 million and covers one year with a two-year renewal option. Unisys will help three participating terminal operators figure out how to integrate biometric-enabled access control systems with TWIC smart cards that are being issued to port workers for access to secure areas. The Transportation Security Administration and Coast Guard are responsible for selecting the readers that will be used in the pilot. Workers will present their TWIC cards to a reader and then place a finger on the reader to compare the fingerprint against the biometric template stored on the card. The reader will automatically grant or deny access and also notify security personnel of an incident. Readers will be used at all pedestrian and vehicle ingress locations.
