A Lockheed Martin [LMT]-constructed PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (PAC-3 MSE) missile detected, tracked, and successfully intercepted a tactical ballistic missile target today, the company said.

The PAC-3 is a high-velocity interceptor using hit-to-kill technology to defend against threats including tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and aircraft.

The test occurred at the White Sands Missile Range, N.M., as part of a U.S. Army-led flight test.

“The PAC-3 MSE continues to demonstrate its reliability and hit-to-kill capability. The enhancements of the MSE will provide the warfighter with the tools needed to defend against current and evolving threats,” Scott Arnold, vice president of PAC-3 programs at Lockheed Martin, said in a statement.

The PAC-3 MSE builds on the original by adding a larger, dual-pulse rocket motor, larger control fins, and an upgraded support system. Combined, these augmentations almost double the missile’s range and improve its performance against missile threats, Lockheed Martin said.
