Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has signed a $14.2 million contract extension with ITT Corp. [ITT] for the company’s AN/SPS-48 Radar Obsolescence, Availability Recovery (ROAR) program, the company reported yesterday.

The contract option ensures continued modernization of 3-D long-range air surveillance systems for both fixed/ground-based and shipboard applications, according to ITT.

Prompted by a successful critical design review in October, this latest extension mirrors a similar contract option exercised in December 2006, worth an additional $10 million. To date, the total contract value is over $32 million, ITT said.

ITT’s AN/SPS-48 radars were first introduced into the fleet in the mid-1980s as part of the New Threat Upgrade (NTU) program on aircraft carriers, cruisers and destroyers. ROAR will lessen total cost of ownership, including maintenance, by reducing the impact of obsolescence in major subassemblies, and increase fleet readiness by improving operational availability, according to ITT.

“This latest extension of the ROAR program further underscores the importance of this system to the U.S. Navy, as well as ITT’s commitment to our nation’s warfighters,” said William Devlin, vice president of ITT Radar Systems-Gilfillan division. “The work being performed to keep the Navy’s AN/SPS-48 radars active will help protect our sailors for the next forty years.”
