Iran’s cyber police head claimed the country had foiled a U.S. cyber attack on Iran’s oil ministry in the last two months, according to a report from the semi-official Fars news agency on Tuesday.
“The Cyber Attacks Emergency Center in FATA could thwart hackers’ attack against the oil ministry. These hackers were from the U.S. and we informed them (the U.S. officials) of the issue in an official letter and also issued an international judicial order and the issue is now being pursued by the foreign ministry,” Brig. Gen. Seyed Kamal Hadianfar, head of the Iran Cyber Police (FATA) said at a forum on cyber crimes in Tehran, according to Fars.
Fars reported that Hadianfar said FATA’s emergency center repelled the attempted attack during a four-day holiday, possibly March 21-24.
The U.S. government has not yet indicated if it has received the letter from Iran. Most official correspondences from Iran to the United States, aside from the current six-party nuclear talks, are handled through the Pakistani Embassy in Washington, D.C. Similarly, American correspondences to Iran are channeled through the Swiss Embassy in Tehran.
