General Electric [GE] has installed its CommerceGuard tracking and detection system at the Port of Oakland in California to monitor shipping containers equipped with the company’s container security devices (CSD). GE says that over 20 ports internationally have the CommerceGuard network installed. GE says additional deployments are planned this year. The Port of Oakland handles more than 99 percent of the containerized goods moving through Northern California. GE’s CSD is mounted inside the door of a shipping container and provides alerts of unauthorized door openings while in transit. Fixed and handheld CommerceGuard readers send information from the CSDs wirelessly to the global CommerceGuard Information Network for access by authorized shippers, port authorities and other officials via the Internet.
