Korean Airport Selects Smiths Detection’s CT System for Carry-On Baggage

Smiths Detection says that Korean Airport Corporation has awarded it and its distribution partner Donggok Precision Co. a $7 million contract for five units each of its HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX computed tomography (CT)-based carry-on baggage scanners, iLane.evo advanced tray handling systems, and IONSCAN 600 explosive trace detectors. The contract also includes Smiths’ checkpoint management software and Checkpoint Evo Plus screening and management platform. The systems will be installed at Jeju International Airport, Korea’s second largest airport. The airport is the first to install the 6040 CTiX system, which is being evaluated at two U.S. airports, Los Angeles International and St. Louis Lambert, as part of checkpoint CT evaluations by the Transportation Security Administration. The CT technology is expected to increase security while making travel easier for passengers. Smiths Detection says the CTiX system eliminates the need for passengers to remove electronic devices and liquids from their carry-on bags.
