Textron [TXT] selected BAE Systems to provide its LiteHUD head-up display for the Textron AirLand Scocpion jet, BAE said Monday.

The initial order is set to support the Scorpion’s flight test program. LiteHUD uses the company’s patented optical waveguide technology and is 60 percent smaller by volume and 50 percent lighter than conventional heads-up displays, BAE said.

The company highlighted LiteHUD is engineered to enhance situational awareness to significantly improve flight safety and reduce pilot fatigue. It has a modular design, including a built-in color camera and enables integration with existing and future cockpits.

“This award marks the second new platform order for LiteHUD, further validating it as the future of head-up display technology. With its revolutionary optics and high-resolution display, LiteHUD will provide Scorpion pilots with the ‘head-up, eyes-out’ capability they need, no matter the mission,” Andy Humphries, director of Advanced Displays at BAE Systems, said in a statement.

The Scorpion has so far had two years of flight operations and is deployed to 10 countries with over 800 flight hours through military training exercises. The multi-mission jet is meant to be an option for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, close air support, armed reconnaissance, maritime and border patrol, and jet training missions.
