The Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) sent a $16 million order to Saab to overhaul the Swedish Navy submarine HMS Södermanland, the company said on Friday.

The order lasts from 2014-2016. It is part of a Swedish armed forces letter of intent regarding underwater capabilities in the 2015-2024 period, announced on June 9, 2014.

The overhaul order comprises the necessary measures to ensure the submarine’s operational availability. One provision of the contract is to defines future needs for maintenance. This may lead to additional work being contracted separately during the 2014-2016 period.

According to the HMS Södermanland’s standard maintenance plan, this type of overhaul is run regularly.

“The order is further proof that Saab’s capabilities in maintenance of submarines and surface vessels are relied upon. This work is an important element of Saab’s operations and we are now working on several such maintenance projects,” Gunilla Fransson, Head of Business Area Security and Defence Solutions at Saab, said in a statement.

The work will be performed from 2014-2016 at the Saab sites in Karlskrona and Malmö. The HMS Södermanland is planned for redelivery in mid-2016.
