The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has awarded Smiths Detection a $17 million contract for Advanced Technology (AT) X-Ray machines to be deployed at passenger checkpoints in some of the nation’s airports. The order is on top of an $8.2 million contract the company received from TSA earlier this spring for 48 of its 6040aTiX X- Ray AT machines (TR2, May 14). TSA says it will receive 154 machines under the new order, indicating a far less expensive unit price versus the previous order. TSA also awarded OSI Systems‘ [OSIS] Rapiscan division a $1.7 million order in May for 27 of its 620DV X-Ray AT machines, which indicates a slightly lower unit price than when TSA ordered 69 AT machines from Rapiscan for $4.4 million earlier this spring.
