The Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) yesterday gave the green light to John Young to become the next chief weapons buyer for the Pentagon, approving a nomination that was brought to the panel in early October.

Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), SASC chairman, told Defense Daily recently that while he did not have a hold on the nomination, he had additional questions for Young regarding information sharing between Congress and the Defense Department.

Young was previously the Director of Defense Research and Engineering and previously served as the assistant secretary of acquisition, technology and logistics for the Navy. Before working at the Pentagon, Young was a congressional staffer and an engineer.

SASC also approved the nominations of Douglas Brook to be the Navy’s next comptroller and of Robert Smolen to be the deputy administrator for defense programs at the National Nuclear Security Administration.

The nominations still have to be approved by the full Senate.
