Identity management firm SecureAuth has developed a new login method that will provide more secure access to Amazon’s cloud services via Common Access Cards (CAC), the company said Feb. 20.

Once a user has been authenticated via SecureAuth using their CAC or another form of two-factor identification, he or she can be automatically authenticated to use the Amazon Web Services[AMZN] dashboard at the agency’s discretion. This reduces the number of logins, which increases efficiency and security.

The niche development means that agencies can use existing CAC identification while regulating which employees in the organization can access and manipulate the cloud. Federal agencies are currently struggling with how to streamline and secure identity access and management (IAM) as the number of devices and services proliferate while insider threats remain. The SecureAuth solution follows a growing desire for “single sign-on” that gives users access to programs and applications via a single but heavily secured login portal.

SecureAuth’s new offering may attract interested federal clients who are considering using Amazon as their cloud service provider. Amazon is one of only nine companies currently approved under the FedRAMP compliance program to provide cloud services to the federal government. The largest cloud service provider in the world, Amazon offers its federal customers Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) through its public cloud as well as a community cloud designed specifically for the government.
