The Pentagon is making progress toward combining its various information networks to create an environment to more rapidly share information throughout the organization and armed services.

The Pentagon’s acting chief information officer, Terry Halvorsen , told reporters on Friday that the department is aiming to establish initial capability for the joint regional security stacks (JRSS) by the end of 2016 and to complete it by the end of 2017.

JRSS is the cornerstone of the Joint Information Environment (JIE) initiative, which is designed to bring together the information technology systems that exist throughout the Pentagon. The goal is to create networks to enable better communication throughout the Defense Department.

Halvorsen said early testing of the JRSS, which consists of servers and switches to run networks,  has shown that the system appears to be working as designed, and has identified some needs to alter software to make improvements.

“It is going to work as designed,” he said.
