Orbit Communications Systems is expanding its platform of airborne satellite communication terminals to include helicopters after receiving a $3 million deal from an unnamed defense services provider.

The Israeli-based communications provider announced on Aug. 13 it will develop its Multi-Purpose Terminal (MPT) system to facilitate data communication between military helicopters via satellites.

This latest deal will incorporate Orbit’s 30-cm MPT30 antenna, which is built to be ultra-compact and ruggedized for specific use in helicopters.

“Our decision to extend the development of our Multi-Purpose Terminals to helicopters was prompted by market demand,” Orbit CEO Eitan Livneh said in a statement. “Time to market is a key factor and our ability to tailor our technology to customer needs is proving to be a very attractive and marketable commodity.”

Orbit will supply its MPT systems for the unnamed defense firm’s helicopters between 2018 and 2022.
