The former European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co., on Jan. 2 began operating under its new brand, Airbus Group, capitalizing on a name that is known worldwide for competing with

Boeing [BA] in the commercial market for passenger and cargo aircraft.

Airbus Group features three operating divisions, Airbus, which is focused on commercial aircraft activities, Airbus Defence and Space, which incorporates the defense and space activities of the former business units Cassidian, Astrium and Airbus Military, and Airbus Helicopters, which includes all commercial and military helicopter activities.

“For many years, Airbus has been a globally renowned synonym for technology breakthrough as well as aeronautic passion and pride,” Tom Enders, CEO of Airbus Group, said in a statement. “Joining forces under the strong Airbus brand gives all our operations and employees the thrust and lift to capture global markets.”

Airbus’ new organization was announced last July as part of a new drive to boost its competitiveness, particularly in global defense and space markets. In December, the company said it would be cutting 6,000 jobs and consolidating facilities in four countries to streamline operations.
