Air Force Maj. Gen. Sarah Zabel was recently appointed Vice Director of the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), the Defense Department said this month.

“In this role, she helps to lead a global organization of military, civilian, and contract personnel who plan, develop, deliver, and operate joint, interoperable, command and control capabilities and a global enterprise infrastructure in direct support of the President, Secretary of Defense, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Combatant Commanders, Department of Defense components, and other mission partners across the full spectrum of operations,” Zabel’s DISA biography webpage said.

As Vice Director, Zabel manages DISA’s 8,000-member staff and $10 billion annual budget.

She was appointed in August after the previous Vice Director, Army Lt. Gen. Alan Lynn, succeeded Air Force Lt. Gen. Ronnie Hawkins as DISA Director last month (Defense Daily, July 24).

Previously, Zabel was Director, Cyberspace Strategy and Policy, Office of Information Dominance and Chief Information Officer, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force.

Earlier, Zabel has served as the 43rd Communications Squadron commander at Pope AFB, N.C.; a computer security evaluator at the National Security Agency; an Air Force Academy instructor; and a staff officer at two combatant commands, the Joint Staff, and the Air Staff.
